SAN LUIS OBISPO – For the third time during the previous four matches, the No. 68 Cal Poly women's tennis program whitewashed its opponent as the Mustangs furthered their dual winning streak to four-successive triumphs with a 7-0 sweep of Loyola Marymount on Saturday afternoon at Mustang Courts.
Cal Poly (5-2), which failed to drop a set on Saturday, opened the victory by winning the doubles point for the 23rd time during the previous 30 matches. Junior Amy Markhoff and sophomore Alexa Lee opened the day at No. 1 with an 8-4 decision versus Ashley Anderson and Miya Jin. Mustang sophomore Margarita Spicin, seeing her first action of the season, teamed at No. 2 with senior Ashley Pane to down Elisaveta Pironkova and Reka Rohonyi , 8-4, before the Cal Poly freshmen partnership of Florence Lehane and Gabrielle Gatewood solidified the doubles point with an 8-6 win at No. 3 versus Shauna Morgan and Melissa Valenzuela.
Lee returned in singles action to down April Bisharat at No. 1, 7-5, 6-3, before Lehane triumphed at No. 2 versus Pironkova, 6-1, 6-4. At No. 3, Pane dealt Jin a 6-1, 6-1 defeat before Cal Poly freshman Jennifer Cornea topped Valenzuela at No. 4, 6-3, 6-0. Sophomore Jocelyn Davis won her match at No. 5 against Anderson, 6-2, 6-1, before freshman Kathryn Webb (above) finalized Cal Poly's sweep with a 7-5, 6-4 victory at No. 6 versus Rohonyi.
"Loyola Marymount is a very strong program and I thought we played our most complete match of year. Our players were focused on every point and we made very few unforced errors," 11th-year Cal Poly head coach Hugh Bream said. "Our team is young, but our learning curve is quick. We've worked hard on our quickness, strength and conditioning and I like how we're moving on the court with explosiveness. Both teams were equal in talent today, but conditioning was the factor."
Cal Poly returns to the court at No. 7 UCLA on Monday, Feb. 14 at 1:30 p.m.
