SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Cal Poly women's tennis team dropped just one total set on Thursday afternoon as the 68th-ranked Mustangs produced a sweep of Cal State Bakersfield on Mustang Courts.
Cal Poly (4-2), which has captured the doubles point during 22 of its previous 29 matches, opened Thursday's whitewash by yielding only seven total points in doubles play against the Roadrunners. At No. 1, junior Amy Markhoff and sophomore Alexa Lee dealt Cal State Bakersfield's Julian Mannix and Estefania Limpias an 8-2 defeat before senior Ashley Pane and junior Jocelyn Davis produced an 8-3 victory at No. 2 versus Veronica Dimas and Gabriela Horton. The freshmen pairing of Jennifer Cornea and Ane McPike then finalized the sweep at No. 3 with an 8-2 win versus Ashlee Thorneycroft and Korina Barefield.
Pane returned in singles play to down Mannix at No. 1, 6-2, 6-0. Lehane followed at No. 2 with a 6-0, 6-0 dismantling of Thorneycroft before Cornea delivered a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 3 against Dimas. Davis suffered Cal Poly's lone blemish of the day at No. 4, but recovered to down Limpias, 4-6, 6-2, 10-4. Freshman Kathryn Webb, however, defeated Horton at No. 5, 6-4, 6-2, before freshman Gabrielle Gatewood finalized the sweep at No. 6 with a 6-0, 6-0 ousting of Barefield.
Cal Poly completes its three-match homestand on Saturday, Feb. 12 versus Loyola Marymount at 11 a.m.
"I felt we were able to focus well today and work on certain aspects we'd like to be using more in both our singles and doubles play," 11th-year Cal Poly head coach Hugh Bream said. "Loyola Marymount will be a challenging opponent for us on Saturday as they are a very deep program from Nos. 1-6 in singles play."
