SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Junior guard Dylan Royer came off the bench to tie his career high with five three-pointers and tallied a game-high 15 points to lead Cal Poly to a 77-51 victory over Sacramento State in a non-conference men's basketball game Wednesday night before 2,247 in Mott Gym.
Royer (pictured at right), a graduate of Morro Bay High School, made all of his five three-point attempts in 21 minutes of play and has led Cal Poly in scoring each of the last two contests. He tallied a career-high 18 points in last Saturday's 72-55 win over Mississippi Valley State at the Las Vegas Invitational.
Senior guard Amaurys Fermin added 12 points, his fifth double-digit game of the season, and six assists while senior forward Will Taylor tallied 11 points as Coach Joe Callero's Mustangs improved to 5-2 on the season. Fermin has a 14-to-1 assists-to-turnovers ratio in his last two games.
Sacramento State (3-3) was led by junior center Konner Veteto with 11 points, the lone Hornet in double figures.
Cal Poly's 5-2 mark represents its best seven-game start since the 2003-04 team opened with a 4-3 mark. The 2001-02 Mustang squad started the year with a 6-2 mark and was 9-3 after 12 games before finishing 15-12.
A layup by sophomore forward Chris Eversley with 11:23 to go in the first half snapped an 11-11 tie and gave Cal Poly the lead for good. The Mustangs led by as many as eight points on four occasions in the first half, including a 37-29 advantage at the break.
Three minutes into the second half, senior forward David Hanson scored on a layup to spark a 17-1 Cal Poly run, resulting in a 59-36 Mustang cushion with 8:14 to go.
Senior forward Jordan Lewis capped the run with a layup. Sacramento State went 0-for-8 from the floor during the run of eight minutes and 43 seconds. Cal Poly led by as many as 27 points down the stretch.
The Mustangs hit 51 percent of their floor shots (28 of 55) while holding Sacramento State to just 43 percent efficiency (20 of 47). Cal Poly was 9-for-21 from three-point range while the Hornets connected on just four of 13 treys.
Cal Poly, undefeated this season when outrebounding its opponent, built a 40-21 advantage on the boards, led by Taylor and senior center Will Donahue, each with six. The Mustangs turned the ball over just eight times.
Cal Poly hosts Saint Mary's (4-1) on Saturday night at 7 in Mott Gym.
