SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Junior center Will Donahue registered 17 points and 10 rebounds to post his second double-double in as many regular season games and junior forward David Hanson added 18 points, but the Cal Poly men's basketball team was held to a 29.6 percent field goal mark and zero points during the final six minutes, 35 seconds of action by Cal State Monterey Bay on Thursday evening in suffering a 50-47 defeat inside Mott Gym.
Senior guard Shawn Lewis added eight points and seven rebounds for Cal Poly (1-1), which held the lead for the opening 35-and-a-half minutes, but was outscored, 13-5, during the final 12 minutes in falling during the program's home-opening contest.
A Donahue (above) jumper and Hanson three-pointer provided Cal Poly a 5-0 lead inside the opening 90 seconds and the Mustangs, despite shooting 39.3 percent from the floor during the opening half, led by as much as 27-17 shortly before intermission.
A layup from Donahue to open the second half again vaulted Cal Poly's lead into double-digit territory, but a 15-8 run by the Division II Otters (1-0) shortened the Mustang advantage to three points with 12 minutes remaining. Hanson, who finished 8-for-10 from the free throw line, converted two attempts moments later to stabilize the Cal Poly lead. The Mustangs, however, received just a Hanson layup and three free throws down the stretch in suffering the program's first loss against a lower-division opponent since the Mustangs transitioned to the Division I level prior to the 1994-95 campaign.
Otter guard Davion Berry sank two free throws with seven seconds to play but, on the game's final possession, a Hanson three-pointer fell short for the Mustangs.
Cal Poly continues action at Montana State (2-1) on Sunday, Nov. 21 at 6 p.m. PT.
