One of the most prolific running backs in collegiate football history, the name Louis Jackson brings thoughts to many fans of dazzling touchdown runs, explosive speed, and a player who wore the Cal Poly uniform with pride.
With 3,330 career rushing yards, Jackson held the school record for an astounding 18 years. His record for career touchdowns of 32 stood for 28 years while his mark for rushing attempts in a single season lasted 28 years as well. He led Cal Poly to the 1980 National Championship with 1,424 yards rushing, which was a school record for 25 years. Twice named to the NCAA Division II First-Team All-America squad, Jackson is one of six Cal Poly Mustangs to rush for over 1,000 yards in a season twice. He rushed for a then-school record 267 yards against Portland State in 1978.
He was drafted by the New York Giants in the fifth round of the 1981 draft. During his professional career, he played with the Giants and Los Angeles Rams. He also played with the Portland Breakers and the Oakland Invaders of the USFL. In the fall of 1999, Jackson was a nominee for the NCAA Division II Football Hall of Fame.
Jackson served as a police corporal for the Clovis Police Department for 20 years (1995-2015) and currently works as emergency manager for Fresno Pacific University.
