Mustang Decathletes, Heptathletes on Top After Day 1 of Jim Klein Invitational

MONTECITO, Calif. — Cal Poly resides atop the leaderboard for both the decathlon and heptathlon at the Jim Klein Multi-Event Invitational following the first day of competition at Westmont Track.

Mustang junior Jessica Rasmussen compiled a field-leading 2,668 points through Thursday's first-round heptathlon action.

Additionally, redshirt freshman Keana Viss is in fourth place with 2,489 points, followed by sophomore teammate Kirby Ruback in eighth out of the 16 competitors, at 2,437.

The Mustang men, meanwhile, own the top three spots in the decathlon heading into Friday.

Jacob Rickman, a sophomore making his combined-events debut, amassed a total of 3,650 points (including two PRs: an 11.14-second time in the 100-meter dash along with a mark of 47 feet, 6.25 inches in the shot put).

Ted Scranton, a junior, opened with a second-place round of 3,532 points (matching his career-best high jump of 6-2), while senior Devin Bennett holds third place among 13 student-athletes, scoring a 3,474 total.

Competition will conclude with the decathlon starting at 10:30 a.m. Friday, ahead of the heptathlon at 1 p.m., all to wrap up around 5 p.m.
