- Title:
- Volunteer Assistant
A four-year letterwinner for Cal Poly (2005-08), former midfielder Anthony Grillo is in his first season as the program's volunteer assistant after serving as the Director of Operations from 2011-13.
Grillo, who made 46 appearances during his four-year Mustang career, notched just one career goal, but his 49th-minute strike against nationally ranked UC Santa Barbara on Oct. 17, 2007 ranks as one of the most prominent goals in Cal Poly program history. In front of 7,143 spectators at Alex G. Spanos Stadium – at the time, the ninth-largest regular season attendance figure in NCAA history – Grillo scored to break a 1-1 halftime deadlock and snap Cal Poly's then-12-match, seven-year winless drought versus Blue-Green rival UC Santa Barbara. The goal earned Grillo a spot on the Soccer America National Team of the Week, making him the first and only Mustang in program history to achieve the honor.
A native of Sun Valley, Nev., Grillo made a career-high 15 appearances for the Mustangs during the 2007 season. He majored in horticulture at Cal Poly.
