High School -- Carter recorded 50 tackles, including four sacks and eight tackles for lost yardage, and intercepted a pair of passes as a senior under head coach Don Arax at Bullard High School in Fresno. Carter helped the Knights to an 8-4 record, a share of the County/Metro League title and a berth in the quarterfinals of the CIF-Central Section Division I playoffs. Carter earned first-team All-County/Metro League honors and also was named the league’s defensive player of the year. Carter also was named to the All-Fresno Bee first team on defense and received the school’s Wendy’s High School Heisman Trophy. As a junior, Carter earned first-team all-County/Metro League honors as a linebacker and was an All-Fresno Bee honorable mention. He can bench press 280 pounds, squat 435 and clean 290, Carter, who has runs the 40 in 4.63 seconds, played for the city team in the Fresno City/County All-Star Game. He lettered in baseball as a freshman and sophomore and track and field as a senior. Off the field, Carter was a member of the National Society of High School Scholars and California Scholastic Federation and served as a volunteer coach for Special Olympics. He was a 2012 nominee for Boys State, earned the school’s scholar-athlete award in 2009 and 2010 and made the Principal’s Honor Roll in both 2009 and 2012. Carter also visited Menlo, Sacramento State and Lewis and Clark before choosing Cal Poly.
