Kevin Sheehan
- Title:
- Student Manager
Kevin Sheehan, a 2019 graduate of Loyola-Sacred Heart High School in Missoula, Montana, is in his first season as a student manager for the Cal Poly football team.
Sheehan, who grew up in Missoula and played football for the Rams, attended his first college football game when he was less than one month old. Growing up, Kevin enjoyed attending football games with family, especially with his Grandfather Gene and Uncle Brad. Kevin recalls first learning about Cal Poly following a Saturday morning youth football game in fifth grade, while first seeing the Mustangs play in 2011 in Missoula. Over the next several years, Kevin kept a close eye on the Mustangs.
Though he enjoyed playing football, Kevin ultimately knew he wanted to coach. During his offseasons in high school, Kevin analyzed several offensive schemes. Serendipitously, he spent years following and breaking down Coach Beau Baldwin’s offense at Eastern Washington from 2014-16.
Inbetween graduating high school and starting college at Cal Poly, Kevin spent six weeks as an offensive assistant under his high school head coach Todd Hughes. It was during these six weeks that Kevin confirmed his desire to coach football. He contributes his aspirations to all of his high school coaches, especially to Coach Hughes, who has played a critical role in Kevin’s life. Furthermore, Kevin credits his quarterback coach Mac Roche for spending tens of hours in the spring of his senior year sharing his extensive football knowledge.
In January 2020, Kevin applied to work for Cal Poly’s athletics equipment department in hopes of finding a way to work under head coach Beau Baldwin in some capacity. However, this was put on hold in April 2020 when Kevin returned back home because of the COVID-19 pandemic. That June, he once again accepted a position as the passing game coordinator by Coach Hughes. He would end up calling much of the offense and worked with the quarterbacks.
Finally returning to San Luis Obispo in January 2021, Kevin started his job as an equipment manager, working for coach James Montgomery. Coach Montgomery allowed Kevin to attend virtual running back meetings, leading to Kevin attending his first offensive staff meetings shortly after.
Currently, Kevin works as a student assistant for offensive coordinator Nick Edwards. Each day, Kevin breaks down film, prepares self-scout reports, diagrams plays, and analyzes opponents. He also is responsible for studying other college and NFL teams. During Cal Poly football games, Kevin looks for defensive tendencies, as well as reporting coverages to the offensive staff. Kevin expresses his gratitude to the whole Mustang coaching staff for this opportunity, especially Coach Baldwin, Coach Edwards, and Coach Montgomery.
