A three-year varsity starter and team captain, Whelan threw for 5,051 career yards and 57 touchdowns while completing 71 percent of his passes over 34 games. During his senior season, he completed 114 of 155 passes (73.5%) for 2,003 yards and 20 touchdowns while adding 348 rushing yards and eight scores. Whelan helped lead Soquel to the 2023 CIF Division 4-AA State Championship as a sophomore and later earned Gabilan League MVP honors after guiding the Knights to a league title as a junior. A standout three-sport athlete, he also competed in baseball and basketball at Soquel High School.
