High School -- Akins caught 53 passes for 803 yards and four touchdowns as a senior under head coach Kevin Pearson at Cathedral High School in Los Angeles, the same school which produced Mustang slotback Kristaan Ivory. Akins also recorded 32 tackles and 10 pass breakups on defense. Thirteen of Akins' catches were made in the Harvard-Westlake game, a school record. He earned second-team All-Mission League honors and also was chosen his team's offensive MVP. He also landed on the Prepstar and Literacy Classic all-star teams and was named Cathedral's Athlete of the Year. The Phantoms were 10-3 overall and finished third in the Mission League at 3-2. Cathedral reached the semifinal round of the CIF-Southern Section Western Division playoffs last fall. Akins played just four games as a junior and caught 19 passes for 321 yards and one touchdown before he was sidelined with a knee injury. Akins also ran on the track and field team at Cathedral with best times of 14.02 seconds in the 110-meter high hurdles and 38.65 in the 300-meter intermediates. The Del Rey League high hurdles champion placed second in the high hurdles at the CIF-Southern Section Division III finals in 2012 and placed third in the 2013 state meet. In addition to Cal Poly, the Honor Roll member was recruited by San Jose State, Fresno State and Sacramento State, choosing to be a Mustang because "I love the coaching staff and I get an opportunity to play with my old teammate (Ivory). I love the environment, and the academic standards are very intriguing."
