FORT WORTH, Texas — Cal Poly secured the doubles point, and Natalie Lynch and Jessica MacCallum both won sets over nationally ranked opponents, but Mustang women’s tennis fell short 4-2 in a tightly-contested match at No. 23 TCU on Wednesday.
The Mustangs (8-7) gave the high-powered Horned Frogs (14-2) everything they could handle and jumped on them early with a strong showing in doubles.
Cal Poly fell at No. 1, but redshirt junior Amy Leather and true freshman Tia Bonita Jakupovic-Kljako stepped up at No. 3 and delivered a 6-3 victory to move to 6-3 as a pairing this season. This forced the doubles point to all come down to court No. 2.
Playing together for the fourth time in their collegiate careers and the first time this season, Sarah and Jessica MacCallum rose to the occasion and earned a 7-5 win to propel Cal Poly to the doubles point.
The Mustangs carried a 1-0 lead into singles play before TCU won in straight sets at No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6 to take a 3-1 advantage and put themselves on the brink of clinching the dual.
However, Cal Poly wasn’t going down without a fight. Taking the court at No. 2 for just the third time this season, junior Candela Aparisi grabbed a 7-5, 7-5 to make it 3-2 and remain undefeated playing at that spot in the lineup.
The two remaining singles matches at No. 1 and No. 4 featured Mustangs facing off against nationally ranked opponents. Battling the 75th-ranked singles player in the country — Raquel Caballero Chica — Jessica MacCallum more than held her own, winning the second set in her match 6-4 to force a decisive third. Unfortunately, MacCallum come up short in the third 6-3, allowing TCU to clinch the dual victory.
Lynch won the first set in her match at No. 4 against 125th-ranked Cristina Ramos Sierra from TCU in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-2), before dropping the second set in a tiebreaker, 6-7 (4-7). Lynch won the first game in the third set before the Horned Frogs clinched the dual.
After giving their all against a talented TCU team in their nonconference finale, the Mustangs return home to host a pair of pivotal Big West matches next week against Long Beach State at noon on Tuesday, March 31, and Hawai’i on Thursday, April 2, at noon.
