SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly Men’s Tennis team has cracked the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Team Rankings for the first time since 2022, checking in at No. 55 on Feb. 19.
We’re delighted to be in the rankings. With that said, we have much bigger goals and this is just the starting point for us. This honor is a small sign of things to come. It doesn’t change anything that we do on a day-to-day basis, but it is extremely exciting for our young group to see what we can accomplish when we work smart and effectively on the court.Head Coach Nick Carless
Cal Poly is one of three Big West Conference teams represented, joining UC Santa Barbara (No. 20) and Hawai’i (No. 65). The No. 55 ranking marks the Mustangs’ highest placement since they were ranked No. 50 on March 6, 2018. Under the direction of Carless, the program appeared in the year-end ITA Rankings for 11 consecutive seasons (2011-2022).
This team reminds me a lot of my 2014 and 2017 teams in different ways. In 2014, we won the conference tournament with just seven guys, but it was an extremely close group that played with a hunger to outperform opponents. In 2017, we had a much deeper team that could be interchangeable from the 2-8 spots on any given day.Head Coach Nick Carless
The Mustangs are off to a 5-2 start this spring, having won five straight matches against Saint Mary’s, New Mexico, Nevada, Loyola Marymount and Weber State. In singles play, Luc Hoeijmans, Jack Cross and Aaron Eliscu each boast a team-best 6-1 record. Hoeijmans has also partnered with Leo Matthysen in doubles, where the duo leads the team with a 4-2 mark.
Cal Poly will enjoy a brief rest before heading back out on the road for three matches in Chicago. The Mustangs are scheduled to face host DePaul, Dartmouth and Army from Feb. 28 to March 1.
