SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — For the fourth time in her career, Kennedy Buntrock has been crowned the Big West Women’s Tennis Player of the Week, the conference office announced Wednesday.
Buntrock is the first Mustang to win the award this season. This also marks the first time Buntrock has received the distinction since winning it back-to-back weeks last year on March 12 and 19.
The honor for the senior from Henderson, Nevada, comes after she went 2-0 in singles and 1-1 in doubles across Cal Poly's first two duals of the season this weekend in San Diego. Her performance this week was highlighted by earning a straight sets victory against San Diego’s Hannah Read on Sunday, who is the 53rd-ranked singles player in the country.
On Saturday in a 6-1 neutral-site loss to BYU on Saturday, Buntrock earned a 6-4 win at No. 1 doubles with playing partner Jessica MacCallum before securing Cal Poly's lone singles victory and match point in the dual, grabbing a straight-sets win at No. 2.
Buntrock and the rest of the Mustangs take the courts at the Ronca Tennis Center for the first time this season to host their Big West opener against UC Davis at 11 a.m. Sunday.
