DAVIS, Calif. — Cal Poly freshman forward Charish Thompson scored 18 points but it was not enough as the Mustangs fell on the road Saturday to UC Davis, 87-61.
Thompson shot 50 percent from the field on her way to those game-high 18 points. Sophomore guards Gabby Robinson and Jordan Billing added season-highs of 10 and nine points each.
The Aggies, who led from start to finish, had four players score in double figures. They were led by Nya Epps who had 17 points. UC Davis converted Cal Poly’s 21 turnovers into 28 points. They also had 14 offensive rebounds to the Mustangs’ seven.
In the first quarter, UC Davis got out to an 8-2 lead but Cal Poly responded and kept it close, getting back within two at 13-11. In the second quarter, the Aggies used a 13-0 run to push their lead up to 16 and led by 17 at halftime.
The Mustangs had a strong third quarter, going on an 8-0 run at one point to cut the deficit down to 14. However, UC Davis got hot and used an 11-2 run to push its lead back up to 23 and pull away for good.
Cal Poly will now get ready to head across the Pacific next week to face Hawai’i Thursday, Jan. 15 for a 9 p.m. PT tip on ESPN+.
