SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Eager to launch their fall season with momentum, the Mustangs are set to compete at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M., on September 8-9.
The team will face a strong field featuring host New Mexico, BYU, Cal State Fullerton, Fresno State, Long Beach State, Mercer, Montana State, Northern Arizona, Sacramento State, South Alabama, Southern Miss, UNLV, UTEP, and Washington State.
Following the event in New Mexico, the Mustangs will head to the Leadership and Golf Invitational hosted by the University of Washington, mirroring their schedule from last season.
Our fall schedule is the same as last year, so it will be great to return to familiar golf courses. We mixed up the spring schedule with a couple new tournaments that have a great balance of competitive fields. The strength of the fields will challenge us as a team and create opportunities to see how we match up against some of the best programs in the country. There are fantastic benefits to returning to familiar courses, especially being able to measure your growth from one year to the next!Head Coach Courtney Roberts
The highlight of the Mustangs’ 2024-25 season was a victory at the Tulane Classic, the program’s first tournament win since the 2023 Big West Championship. Four of the five Mustangs finished in the top 15, with returners Nicole Koong and Sarah Yoo each placing in the top five.
This year, the team aims to build on its fifth-place finish in last season’s Big West Championship and continue sending golfers to the NCAA postseason, a feat achieved last year by the now-graduated Jensen Jalufka.
One of the finest players in program history, Jalufka cemented her legacy with a program-record 74.1 career stroke average. In addition to earning All-Big West First Team honors, she received the Mustang Way Award at Cal Poly’s annual Night of the Mustang, recognized for her leadership, character, work ethic, and community service.
Last year was incredible for us as a team, and also for Jensen to qualify for the NCAA postseason with an at-large individual bid. Jensen raised the bar of excellence here and set a new standard that inspired our freshmen. They’re all excited by the opportunity and challenge of competing for the top spot!Head Coach Courtney Roberts
Leading the returners is sophomore Nicole Koong, who boasts the second-best career stroke average (74.5) in program history. As a true freshman under Roberts, Koong received All-Big West Honorable Mention honors and shot a 67 at the Ptarmigan Ram Classic, tying for the fifth-best single-round score ever by a Mustang.
Also returning is junior Sarah Yoo, who looks to build on an already impressive career. After earning All-Big West honors as a freshman, she finished third on the team last season with a 75.0 stroke average and tied Koong with seven par-or-under rounds, including two in the 60s.
The roster is rounded out by sophomore Sara Torres, who frequently played as Cal Poly’s No. 5 golfer and posted a season-low 227 at the Leadership and Golf Invitational, and junior Triana Fernando, who saw action in six rounds last year.
Roberts also welcomes three freshmen to the squad: Taylor Baker (Sacramento), Alex Flier (Los Angeles), and Maddy Saysanasongkham (San Diego).
We [Roberts and Assistant Coach Beth Lillie] began tracking this incoming class of freshmen the very first summer we were hired at Cal Poly. All three recruits had incredibly decorated junior and amateur careers, and by my measure, this is the strongest recruiting class in Cal Poly golf history. To bring in three freshmen int he same class immediately adds to our team depth. We had great competition in our first qualifier between the entire roster and we expect them to push each other and compete for starting spots in every tournament.Head Coach Courtney Roberts
