FORT COLLINS, Colo. — The Cal Poly women's golf team stormed the Ptarmigan Ram Classic, capturing a share of second place in a tournament defined by a record-shattering performance during a weather-shortened finish.
The Mustangs exploded out of the gate, firing a program-record 272 (-16) in the first round to lead the field by five strokes. This historic performance, which bested the previous record by four strokes, was powered by an incredible display from the team's top four scorers: Taylor Baker, Nicole Koong, Maddy Saysanasongkham, and Alex Flier. Together, they combined for 22 birdies, all shooting under par.
The Mustangs' commanding lead was tested when inclement weather in Colorado forced a delay and ultimately led to the cancellation of the final round on Tuesday morning. The tournament was officially shortened to 36 holes. Despite a tougher afternoon in challenging conditions, Cal Poly's stellar first round secured them a tie for second place at 571 (-5) with Big West rival and reigning conference champion Cal State Fullerton.
Leading the charge was true freshman Taylor Baker, who seized the individual championship. Baker announced her arrival with a legendary 65 (-7) in the first round, a score that ties Caroline Cantlay (2019) for the best 18-hole round in program history.
Baker also never touched par territory overall during the round and finished with a 138 (-6), becoming the first Mustang to win an individual title since Kaylyn Noh in 2022. For the tournament, Baker carded 10 birdies against just four bogeys.
Nicole Koong secured her second straight top-10 finish (T8) with a career-best 66 in the first round, which ties for second-best in program history.
Maddy Saysanasongkham delivered a career-best outing, tying for 10th place. The true freshman recorded her lowest single-round (70) and 36-hole (143) scores, highlighted by an eagle on the ninth hole in the second round.
Alex Flier also carded a new personal best with an under-par first round, and Sarah Yoo rounded out the team scoring (157).
The Mustangs conclude their fall schedule on October 13-14 at the Dale McNamara Invitational in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma.
