UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. — Cal Poly finished fourth out of 16 teams at the Leadership & Golf Invitational in Washington, with three Mustangs placing in the top 20 individually. The team improved both its score and its placement from last year's tournament, shaving off seven strokes and climbing seven spots in the standings.
Despite a challenging first round of 15-over, the Mustangs rallied with strong performances in rounds two and three. Their combined score of 8-over through the final 36 holes was bested by only four other teams in the field. Also, only tournament champions Eastern Michigan scored better on par-3s than Cal Poly.
The team's 584-stroke total across the last two rounds bested last season's mark by four strokes and now ranks among the top 25 two-round scores in program history. Cal Poly rose two places on the final day to secure its fourth-place finish (887).
Three Mustangs cracked the top 20, powered by stellar play in the second and third rounds.
Nicole Koong, who remains Cal Poly's top scorer after Chambers Bay, finished tied for seventh at even par (216). Her performance, which included two under-par rounds and five birdies on the final day, stands as one of the best 54-hole outings of her young career and lowers her season scoring average to 72.67.
True freshman standout Taylor Baker also shot a pair of under-par rounds, finishing just three strokes back (219) of Koong to tie for 14th place. Fellow freshman Maddy Saysanasongkham tied for 20th (222), mounting a fantastic comeback on the final day with a five-stroke turnaround after carding seven bogeys in the second round.
Alex Flier (65th, 233) and Sara Torres (T71st, 237) rounded out the team scoring for Cal Poly.
Mirroring their fall schedule from last season, the Mustangs head to Fort Collins, Colo., next Monday and Tuesday for the Ptarmigan Ram Classic, an event where the program has consistently posted some of its best scores.
