Mustangs Draw No. 20 USF in Thursday Home Opener
9/11/2025 9:36:00 PM | Men's Soccer
SAN LUIS OBISPO – The Cal Poly men's soccer program placed four of its seven Thursday evening shot attempts on frame – but were unable to best San Francisco goalkeeper Lucas Jones – as the Mustangs played out a scoreless draw with the 20th-ranked Dons in their 2025 home opener at Mustang Memorial Field.
Senior goalkeeper Nicky McCune chalked up a pair of saves – including a final stop in the 87th minute – to collect his second clean sheet of 2025 as Cal Poly furthered its unbeaten home streak to 10 successive matches dating to 2023.
"I think USF is a really well-coached team that compete extremely hard. They have a very good side and you can see – even though it's early in the season – why they're ranked so high," third-year Cal Poly head coach Oige Kennedy said. "We felt our boys battled well all night and created some good chances. We probably feel that if we had been a little more clinical in the final third we could have pushed for the win in the end.
"It was great to keep another clean sheet and our defending group were excellent all night long, winning headers, blocking shots and being first in the box. That's the bedrock of our team so we're proud of that tonight."
After McCune made his first save Thursday in the 16th minute, Cal Poly saw junior midfielder Jackson Miller turned away in the 33rd before sophomore forward Finn Linas was stopped on 42 minutes.
Into the second half, sophomore midfielder Rylan Firouznam was thwarted in the 63rd before junior forward Jack Civitts (above) saw his 77th-minute attempt saved by Jones.
The Dons outshot Cal Poly, 12-8, but produced just the two attempts on target.
Cal Poly continues its home stand Sunday, Sept. 14 against Saint Mary's. Kickoff is 4 p.m.
