
Atilano Qualifies for 400 Hurdles Final at U20s

EUGENE, Ore. — Freshman Vincent Atilano advanced to the men's 400-meter hurdles final and freshman Ben Feyrer competed in the men's pole vault during the first day of the USATF U20 Championships on Thursday at University of Oregon's Hayward Field.
As Cal Poly's lone representatives at this year's U20s, Atilano and Feyrer tried their best to show out for all of Mustang nation in "TrackTown USA."
In the second of two heats in the first round of the men's 400 hurdles, Atilano crossed the finish line in third place with a time of 52.49 seconds to advance to the final. The Carlsbad, Calif. native was .61 seconds off his personal best and he'll race against eight others in the 400 hurdles final at 5:19 p.m. Friday in Eugene.
Just over a month ago at the Big West Championships, Atilano placed third in the 400 hurdles with a time of 51.88 seconds, the 10th-fastest time in school history. He also ran the opening leg on Cal Poly's 4x400-meter relay that qualified for the NCAA West Preliminaries.
Feyrer officially capped off a sensational freshman season by finishing 11th out of 16 competitors in the men's pole vault at U20s. He cleared 16 feet, 7.25 inches (5.06 meters) on his third attempt and narrowly missed out at achieving a lifetime best of 17 feet, 1 inch (5.21m). The Davis, Calif. native captured second in the pole vault at this year's Big West Championship and qualified for the West Prelims, where he finished 26th overall.
