SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — After some strong performances at the UC Santa Barbara Invitational over the weekend, junior Rory Devaney was crowned the Big West Men's Field Athlete of the Week, while freshman Vincent Atilano was named the Big West Men's Track Athlete of the Week.
This is the ninth time overall and the first time since April 30, 2024, that the Cal Poly track and field team has swept the Big West weekly awards on the men's side.
For Devaney, this is the fourth time he has received Big West Men's Field Athlete of the Week honors in his career and the first time this season. This is the first Big Weekly praise Atilano has garnered.
Devaney took first in the men's hammer throw at the UCSB Invite on Saturday with a mark of 226 feet, 10 inches, just 1 inch shy of his personal best (226-11) that ranks No. 2 in school history, No. 8 in the West Region and No. 13 in Division I this season.
Last year, Devaney qualified for the NCAA West Preliminaries in both the discus and hammer, placing second and third respectively in each at the 2024 Big West Championships to earn All-Big West honors in both. Devaney is the current school record holder in the men's discus (189-1) and weight throw (71-4.25).
Atilano posted a lifetime best of 46.95 seconds to win the men's 400-meter at the UCSB Invite on Saturday. The time is the 10th fastest in school history and ranks sixth in the Big West this season. Earlier this season at the Stanford Invitational, Atilano recorded a PR in the 400 hurdles (52.20 seconds) that was just .06 seconds off No. 10 in school history and ran the third leg on Cal Poly's 4x100 and 4x400 relays which posted some of the program's fastest times in school history at the meet.
The Mustangs will split the team between a pair of meets this week, sending their top distance runners to the Oxy Invitational on Saturday while the rest of squad will compete in the Fresno State Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
