
Szeto, Metzger Climb Leaderboard Monday at Big West Championship

LA QUINTA – Senior Baron Szeto jumped 15 spots on the Big West Championship leaderboard while sophomore Leo Metzger (above) improved 16 positions during Monday’s second round, but the Cal Poly men’s golf program remained in 10th position entering the final 18 holes.
At the 7,056-yard, par-72 La Quinta Country Club, Szeto – the nation’s 82nd-ranked player – climbed to 23rd place with four birdies against three bogeys for a one-under 71. Szeto enters Tuesday’s final round with a two-over 146.
Szeto shares 23rd position with freshman Nolan Kuszyk, who birdied five holes but finished with a one-over 73 and the two-over 146.
Senior Parker Mapes collected four birdies but also carded five bogeys for a two-over 74 Monday. Mapes resides in 38th with a five-over 149 alongside Metzger, who produced eight birdies as part of a one-under 71 – a seven-shot improvement from Sunday’s opening round.
Sophomore Louis Pilod, meanwhile, dropped to 59th spot.
As a program, Cal Poly improved six shots during Monday’s second round but was unable to improve its standing. With a two-round, 10-over 586, Cal Poly trails joint fourth-place UC Davis and UC Irvine by 11 strokes entering Tuesday’s final round. Cal State Fullerton leads the field with a 17-under 559.
Final round action gets underway at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, April 29.
