SAN LUIS OBISPO – Following back-to-back third-place finishes in 2023 and 2024, the Cal Poly men’s golf program pursues its first Big West Championship title in 19 years and a spot in the NCAA Championship when returning to La Quinta Country Club for the April 27-29 tournament.
The 54-hole championship at the 7,056-yard, par-72 La Quinta Country Club opens with an initial 18 holes on Sunday, April 27. Action continues on Monday, April 28 with a further 18 holes before the final round on Tuesday, April 29.
Leading Cal Poly’s five-player lineup is senior Baron Szeto, now the nation’s 83rd-ranked competitor after capturing Ohio State’s April 18-19 Robert Kepler Invitational by six strokes. The trophy marked Szeto’s third collegiate title after sharing top spot at the 2023 Big West Championship and prevailing at Wake Forest’s Lyon’s Links Invitational at Royal Dublin Golf Club in September.
Szeto, who also finished fourth at last year’s Big West Championship, leads Cal Poly this season with a 69.9 stroke average through 30 rounds. He has six top-10 finishes this season and 18 rounds under par while shooting in the 60s 14 times.
Joining Szeto in Cal Poly’s lineup is freshman Nolan Kuszyk (above; 73.1 stroke average), who secured his first collegiate top-10 showing with a fifth-place finish at the Feb. 16-18 Mesquite Desert Classic.
Senior Parker Mapes (73.4) has recorded six rounds under par this year and four in the 60s while Leo Metzger (74.0) – the reigning Big West Freshman Player of the Year – has a pair of top-20 showings this season. Sophomore Louis Pilod (74.4) rounds off Cal Poly’s lineup (sophomore Reese Sato also travels as an alternate selection).
No. 22 Long Beach State is the defending Big West Championship title-winning program, having outdueled Cal State Fullerton last spring by four strokes and Cal Poly by 12.
