LA QUINTA – Nolan Kuszyk recorded the Cal Poly men’s golf program’s low score during Sunday’s opening round at the Big West Championship as the freshman fired an even-par 72 while the Mustangs – as a program – sit 10th on the team leaderboard.
At the 7,056-yard, par-72 La Quinta Country Club, Kuszyk balanced four birdies against four bogeys for a share of 11th place.
Sophomore Louis Pilod is 28th after chalking up four birdies while sustaining six bogeys for a two-over 74. Seniors Baron Szeto – the nation’s 82nd-ranked player – and Parker Mapes each turned in three-over 75s for shares of 38th. Mapes produced three birdies while Szeto registered two.
Sophomore Leo Metzger also chalked up three birdies but was undone by eight bogeys for a six-over 78.
As a program, Cal Poly’s eight-over 296 is just six shots shy of joint fourth-place programs UC Davis and UC Irvine. Last year’s runner-up, Cal State Fullerton, leads with a nine-under 279.
Cal Poly tees off in round No. 2 of the Big West Championship at 12:40 p.m. on Monday, April 28.
