GOLETA, Calif. — Highlighted by six top-10 marks in program history, 10 event victories and over 20 individual personal bests, the Cal Poly track and field team competed in the UC Santa Barbara Invitational on Friday and Saturday at Pauley Track.
A total of 40 Mustangs took part in the meet and 24 personal bests were recorded. On Friday, only the men’s and women’s shot put and discus were contested, but the few Mustangs that competed made sure the team got off to a roaring start at the meet.
Redshirt sophomore Albert Beerbower recorded the first top-10 mark in school history for the Mustangs at the meet, launching an over 2-foot lifetime best in the men’s shot put of 57 feet, 5.75 inches (17.52 meters), the seventh best mark in Cal Poly history. The performance allowed him to place second in the event while graduate student Corban Payne took first in the event with a mark (59-7) that was 9.5 inches off his PR which ranks No. 2 in school history. Sophomore Taylor Hofland also recorded a personal best of 45 feet, 9 inches in the women’s shot put Friday to take second.
The rest of the events were held Saturday with Cal Poly’s sprinters, jumpers and hurdlers stealing the spotlight as the event group posted a total of 15 personal bests and eight collegiate bests.
In the 400-meter alone, six personal bests were recorded as all the Mustangs on the men’s and women’s side that took the start line ran PRs. Sophomore Jordan Jackson led the way on the women’s side, running the fastest 400 time by a Mustang in 22 years (54.59 seconds) to improve her No. 6 time in school history and finish second at the meet. Sophomore Elianah DeMange ran a .2 second personal best of 55.13 seconds to move up to No. 7 in program history while freshman Avery Adelman ran a significant PR (56.86 seconds). All three runners, along with sophomore Kalia Estes, helped Cal Poly capture first in the women’s 4x400 relay with a time of 3:46.95.
On the men’s side in the 400, freshman Vincent Atilano posted the 10th fastest time in school history (46.95 seconds) to win the event while sophomore Alexander Franco ran the 12th fastest time in school history to place second (47.06 seconds). Sophomore Levi Romero also ran a PR (48.19 seconds).
In the women’s long jump, a pair of top 10 marks in school history were recorded. The duo finished second and third respectively in the event.
Junior Desie Armstrong, freshman Madison Easter, senior Ciella Seals and Roy-Williams guided the Mustangs to a first-place finish in the women’s 4x100 relay with a season best of 45.55 seconds and the fastest time by Cal Poly in two years.
Junior Chase Kubinski won both the women’s javelin (139-11) and high jump at the meet, while senior Melody Nwagwu finished first in the triple jump (40-7). Freshman Ella Echsner won the 800 with a lifetime best (2:14.74) while sophomore Logan Hays grabbed first in the pole vault (12-1.5).
