4/26/2025 9:00:00 PM | Women's Tennis
SAN DIEGO, Calif. — For the fifth straight year, the Cal Poly women's tennis team is headed to the Big West Championship match.
With the Mustangs leading 3-2 with two singles matches remaining, senior Romane Mosse stepped up and delivered the dual clinching point at No. 3 to propel No. 2 seed Cal Poly past No. 3 seed Hawai'i 4-2 in the Big West semifinals on Saturday at Barnes Tennis Center.
The victory allowed the Mustangs (19-4) to secure a spot in the Big West Championship at 11 a.m. Sunday against top seed and No. 32-ranked UC Santa Barbara (15-8). Cal Poly will be looking to defend its Big West title after capturing its second in program history and first since 2003 last spring.
Cal Poly opened the dual by winning the doubles point. First, sophomore Natalie Lynch and freshman Jessica MacCallum grabbed a 6-2 victory at No. 3 to improve to 8-2 as a tandem. Then Mosse and junior Kennedy Buntrock provided the clincher at the No. 1 spot, winning 6-2 to move to 13-4 on the year, tied for the 11th most victories by a doubles pairing in a season in Division I program history.
In singles, Hawai'i (10-8) leveled the dual at 1-1 with a win at No. 4 before the Mustangs won in straight sets at both No. 5 and No. 6 to put Cal Poly on the verge of clinching the semifinal match. First, Lynch won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 6 to secure her sixth straight victory and improve to 16-4, the 11th most singles victories in a season in Division I program history. Then MacCallum continued her sensational season, grabbing a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 5 to up her winning streak to nine and move to 18-3 in her true freshman season, tied for the fourth most singles victories in a season in Division I program history.
The Rainbow Wahine made it 3-2 with a win at No. 1, but Mosse made sure to shut the door on any hopes of a Hawai'i comeback. The Viroflay, France native fought off her opponent in the second set to secure a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 3, moving to 15-7 on the year and punching the Mustangs' ticket to the Big West Championship match.
Cal Poly and UCSB squared off just over a week ago in Santa Barbara to wrap up the regular season, with the Gauchos earning a 4-0 win. The Mustangs will be looking for revenge on Sunday in the third all-time meeting between the Blue-Green rivals in the Big West Championship match and first since 2022.
