No. 3 Mustangs Fall to No. 5 Stanford, No. 6 USC Friday

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The No. 3 Cal Poly beach volleyball team fell in its two matches at the first day of the Center of Effort Challenge Friday at Swanson Beach Volleyball Complex with thousands of fans in attendance.
The No. 3 Mustangs lost two close ones to No. 5 Stanford, 4-1, and No. 6 USC, 3-2. Five of the 10 matches combined in the two went to three sets.
Against No. 5 Stanford, Cal Poly’s No. 3 pair of Quinn Perry and Lindsey Sparks won their match 21-18, 21-19. However, the Cardinal won at the four other spots, including three set wins at the No. 2 and No. 5 spots to take the dual.
Against No. 6 USC, the four-time defending national champions, it was an intense back-and-forth battle. Ella Connor and Madi Nichols won at the No. 5 spot, 21-13, 21-13 as well as the No. 1 pair of Erin Inskeep and Piper Ferch, 21-16, 21-19. Tied 2-2, it came down to a third set at the No. 4 spot. It was then the Trojans’ duo taking the third set 15-11 to clinch the dual.
Cal Poly will continue play at day two of the Center of Effort Challenge Saturday with an 11:30 a.m. match against No. 7 Florida State. They will then play a a second match later in the day with the time and opponent to be determined after the match against the Seminoles.
