Mustangs Open Outdoor Track & Field Season in Fullerton, Fresno
3/6/2025 11:00:00 AM | Track and Field
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Looking to build off an historic 2024 season, the Cal Poly track and field program officially opens its outdoor season this week at a pair of meets.
Over 15 Cal Poly distance runners will travel to Southern California on Friday night to take part in the Ben Brown Invite Distance Classic hosted by Cal State Fullerton, while over 40 Mustang sprinters, jumpers, throwers and vaulters head to Fresno State on Saturday for the Bulldog Invite.
Live results for the Ben Brown Invite can be found HERE and schedules for both meets can be found on the Cal Poly track and field schedule page.
At the Ben Brown Invite, Mustang distance runners will only be competing in the 1,500-meter and 5,000-meter and are scheduled to get action underway at 5 p.m. Friday. Redshirt freshman Rory Catsimanes highlights the list of entries for the Mustangs. This fall in his first season as a Mustang, the San Clemente, Calif. native was crowned the Big West Men's Cross Country Freshman of the Year after placing sixth overall at the conference meet to help the Mustang men secure their third straight Big West title. He was also the third Mustang to cross the finish line at the NCAA West Regional meet, taking 45th with a 10K personal best.
Entries for the Mustangs at the Bulldog Invite are highlighted by seven athletes that currently hold top-10 marks in school history outdoors — Rory Devaney (men's hammer throw, discus), Lexi Evans (women's pole vault), Logan Hays (women's pole vault), Travis Martin (men's hammer throw), Colby Neron (men's javelin), Melody Nwagwu (women's long jump, triple jump) and Corban Payne (men's shot put).
Nwagwu is set to make her season debut Saturday after not competing indoors. Last year, Nwagwu became the fourth Mustang in program history to be named the Big West Women's Field Athlete of the Year and the first since 2021 after a remarkable showing at the conference meet. Nwagwu swept the Big West titles in the women's long jump and triple jump becoming the first Big West athlete since 1991 to accomplish the feat and the third overall.
Martin and Devaney are slated to take part in the men's hammer throw Saturday in Fresno and currently sit at No. 1 and No. 2 in school history in the event respectively.
Last year while hosting the Big West Track and Field Championships for the first time in program history, Cal Poly became the first school since CSUN in 2010 to sweep the Big West men's and women's track & field team titles. The Mustang men secured their first Big West title in program history and the women raised their second and first since 2021.
Cal Poly continues its outdoor season on Saturday, March 22, when the Mustangs host their lone home meet this season at the Miller & Capriotti Athletics Complex — the third annual Mark Conover Classic.
