Cal Poly Moves to Program-Best 5-0 Big West Start After Series Winner
3/15/2025 11:15:00 PM | Baseball
LONG BEACH, Calif. -- For the first time in 29 Big West baseball seasons, Cal Poly has won its first five conference games.
Catcher Jack Collins doubled three times, one shy of the school Division I record, while left fielder Dante Vachini and third baseman Alejandro Garza each added a pair of hits as the Mustangs continued their recent hot surge with a 9-1 victory over Long Beach State on Saturday night at Blair Field.
Winner of seven straight and 11 of its last 12 games following a 1-5 start, Cal Poly clinched the Big West series -- the Mustangs won Friday's opener 3-1 -- and improved to 12-6 for the season and 5-0 in conference games.
Held to one run for the second straight night, Long Beach State suffered its fifth straight loss, falling to 6-12 and 1-4.
Sophomore southpaw Josh Volmerding (2-1) struck out six, two shy of his career high set at Texas A&M last month, walked two and scattered five hits over six innings for the victory. The Maria Carrillo High School (Santa Rosa, Calif.) graduate lowered his ERA from 9.33 to 7.40.
Chris Downs, another sophomore left-hander, earned a three-inning save, his first of the year and second of his Mustang career, striking out three with one walk and one hit.
Both teams scored a run in the first inning.
A double by Vachini and a single by Garza produced the Mustang run while three consecutive two-out singles netted an equalizing run for Long Beach State.
Cal Poly scored two runs in both the second and sixth innings for a 5-1 cushion and pulled away with a run in the seventh and three more in the eighth.
Vachini's two-run double in the second snapped a 1-1 tie. Back-to-back doubles by Collins and Casey Murray Jr. made it 4-1 and an RBI single by shortstop Nate Castellon gave Cal Poly its 5-1 lead in the sixth.
Collins' second double knocked in another run in the seventh and Cal Poly completed the scoring in the eighth on a run-scoring single by Zach Daudet, a wild pitch and a force play at second on an RBI grounder by second baseman Ryan Fenn.
With 13 hits, Cal Poly has compiled double-digit hits in nine of its last 11 games. Collins extended his streak of reaching base safely to 18 games.
Shortstop Armando Briseno singled twice and first baseman Connor Charpiot added a double to lead Long Beach State's six-hit offensive attack.
The Dirtbags stranded 10 runners on the basepaths, including two in the first and sixth innings. They were retired in order just once, by Downs in the eighth.
The final game of the series will be played Sunday at 1 o'clock with sophomore right-hander Ethan Marmie (2-1, 4.61 ERA) on the mound for Cal Poly.
