SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly has transformed itself into one of the best offenses in the Big West thus far and will guard a five-game winning streak this weekend in its second conference series of the season.
As a team, Cal Poly leads the conference with 172 hits, and is second with 126 runs, a .298 batting average, and 112 RBI. The Mustangs have put together six consecutive games of double-digit hits and four straight of double-digit runs.
The Mustangs (10-6, 3-0 BWC) head to Long Beach State (6-10, 1-2 BWC) for a three-game Big West series with games occurring at 6 pm Friday, 6 pm Saturday, and 1 pm Sunday. Cal Poly is tied with UCSB at the top of the conference standings and for the longest current streak.

Mustangs Riding High
Earlier this week, Dylan Kordic solidified himself in program and NCAA Baseball history as the only player in Cal Poly’s Division I era to hit two home runs in one inning, leading the way for the Mustangs to clobber San Jose State 18-4 and stay undefeated in midweek games.
On a 9-1 run since upsetting top-ranked Texas A&M in College Station, the Mustangs are hitting at an astonishing .352 clip, averaging over 10 runs per game, and have racked up over 200 total bases in that stretch. Nine Mustangs averaging at least two plate appearances per game are hitting over .280 for the season.
Jack Collins and Kordic, responsible for seven homers during this run, have also supplied a third of the team’s RBIs and a quarter of the total bases alongside slugging well above .800 through the last ten games.
Along with leading the Mustangs in multiple hitting categories, Collins is second in the conference for RBIs (24), tied for the lead in doubles (9), and fourth for both hits (25) and slugging (.719). After playing 11 games with the Dirtbags last season, this will be Jack Collins’ first return to Long Beach State since transferring to Cal Poly for the 2025 season.
Just as impressive has been true freshman Nate Castellon who had a fantastic series against Cal State Fullerton, helping Cal Poly sweep the Titans after going 6-for-11 (.545) with 1.000 fielding from shortstop.
On the pitching end, Griffin Naess is beginning to settle in and look like his 2024 self, allowing just three earned runs in his last two starts against Seton Hall and Cal State Fullerton, while also totaling 12 strikeouts through the pair of contests. Ethan Marmie improved to 2-1 after securing victory in both his last starts and pitching 16 1/3 innings for 13 strikeouts.
Tanner Sagouspe has notched a pair of saves and one win over his last four relief appearances. The veteran righty has only allowed a single earned run through 12 1/3 innings and tallied four multi-strikeout performances this season.
Vs… Long Beach State
Long Beach State has played a competitive schedule through the non-conference part of the season.
Though the Beach have yet to win a series, they took wins off Northwestern, Cal Baptist, Pepperdine, Seattle, Michigan, and a ranked UC Irvine squad.
Since that win against the Anteaters, Long Beach State has dropped its last three games.
Historically, the Mustangs are 64-101 against Long Beach State. Cal Poly is still 16-15 over the last ten years, which includes four series wins in the last six.
The Dirtbags are led offensively by senior outfielder Alex Champagne, a third-year Long Beach State veteran who transferred from Arizona State before the 2023 season.
Champagne is the team’s batting average leader (.323), but their runs have come mostly from the trio of Kyle Ashworth (14 RBI), Armando Briseno (14), and Connor Charpiot (14), who combine for over a third of the team’s total runs batted in this season.
Junior starter Kellan Montgomery is unbeaten this season, leading the Big West with a 4-0 record, and carries a 4.87 ERA into the series. He has collected 20 strikeouts through the four starts.
