Mustangs Total 25 Runs in Doubleheader Sweep of Seton Hall
3/1/2025 10:00:00 PM | Baseball
Game One…
Dante Vachini, Alejandro Garza, Cam Hoiland, Braxton Thomas, and Nate Castellon all collected three hits while Ryan Fenn and Jack Collins each drove in four runs as all nine Mustang starters tallied hits for the second game in a row.
Cal Poly improved to 4-5 for the season while Seton Hall fell to 3-6. The second game of the doubleheader was scheduled to start at 5:25 p.m. with sophomore right-hander Ethan Marmie on the mound for the Mustangs.
Collins staked Cal Poly to a 4-0 lead with a grand slam in the first inning and the Mustangs never looked back, though Seton Hall pulled to within a run at 5-4 with two runs in both the second and third innings.
Cal Poly pulled away with four runs in the third inning, two in the fourth, and six in the fifth. Cam Hoiland fueled the rally with a solo home run. Vachini was 7-for-9 in the series with eight RBIs at that point.
The win went to Mustang sophomore southpaw Josh Volmerding (1-1), who struck out four and scattered five hits over five innings. Cal Poly won Friday's series opener, 18-4.
Game Two…
Ethan Marmie entered a pitcher's duel with Seton Hall's ace Ryan Reich, who was saved for the third game of this series. Marmie, coming off a fantastic outing against Texas A&M last weekend, earned the 5-4 win after accumulating a single-game career-high seven strikeouts through 8 ? innings.
Collins, Fenn, and Garza collected an RBI for the third consecutive game, bringing their totals in the series to eight, seven, and six RBIs, respectively. Dante Vachini remains the team leader in batting average (.387) after improving to 8-for-13 in the series. Collins' team-leading 14 RBIs are tied for fourth in the Big West.
The two foes remained scoreless and hitless through the first three innings until Seton Hall's Kevin Milewski sent a solo home run over the left field wall for a 1-0 Pirates lead in the top of four.
In the bottom of five, Casey Murray Jr. led off with a single and immediately took a trip around home with Cam Hoiland's right-field single. Hoiland stretched that hit to third as the Pirate right fielder overran the ball's first hop.
Cal Poly took its first lead in the bottom of six as Fenn scored unearned on Jack Collins' RBI grounder. The next inning yielded three more runs with Fenn and Garza picking up RBIs. Jack Collins extended his impressive hitting streak to all ten games this season shortly after.
With two outs on the board in the ninth, Seton Hall collected three hits in four at-bats to drive in a run and force Cal Poly to bring up Tanner Sagouspe in relief of Marmie after a career night for the sophomore. Though the Pirates tacked on two more to come within one run of Cal Poly's lead, the Mustangs held on for the 5-4 victory and series winner.
The Mustangs improved to 5-5 after the Saturday doubleheader sweep. Only one contest remains in the four-game series as the Mustangs and Pirates will wrap up the weekend with a 1:00 PM game at Baggett Stadium on Sunday.
