HOUSTON, Texas — The Mustangs picked up three individual medals and one relay podium finish on day three of the Big West Championships as the men remain in third place for the team rankings, and Cal Poly's women still look to climb from sixth during the final day of competition.
Summer Cheng got Cal Poly started making a B-Final in the 100 Fly (55.65) with a mark that was just shy of cracking the program's top-5 list, finishing the event in 14th. The men's side did not yield a finalist, but Finn Schlamp was the fastest Mustang (47.94) during the prelims and came within .05 seconds of his second-best program mark.
Three Mustangs swam in the women's 400 IM B-Final, with Rhian Neitzel (4:23.31) leading the way in 11th, followed by Olivia Sundgren (4:26.94) in 13th and Kayla Wieckowski (4:30.21) in 16th.
Alex Seybold was the first of Cal Poly's three podium finishes on the day, earning bronze in the men's 400 IM (3:49.97) while also resetting his second-best time in program history, beating his mark from earlier this season. Krishna Clarke also swam the A-Final (3:55.07) after a solid prelims and would finish 7th. Cole Groom picked up a few points in 14th place of the B-Final (4:03.39).
Courtney Cross (1:53.13) and Keira Scott (1:53.54) narrowly missed the women's 200 Free B-Final. On the men's side, Lucas Meneghetti came close to a podium finish (1:36.88) but still managed to swim Cal Poly's fourth-fastest time in program history as Nick Elliott (1:37.97) also made the A-Final alongside his teammate.
Cal Poly finally earned its first gold of the tournament with Evan Yoo's blazing fast 100 Breast victory (52.40), not only almost 1.5 seconds faster than the runner-up, but the transfer also crushed the Big West record in both the prelims and finals. Yoo's conference record reset his top program mark while standing as an NCAA B-Cut time.
Alex Power (55.22) swam well enough in the prelims to also earn an A-Final spot, while Camilo Vargas (56.00) and Luke Reyes (56.16) took part in the B-Final. Moving over to the women's side of the 100 Breast, Melia Costa's prelims (1:03.14) earned her the sole Cal Poly B-Final spot while just .12 seconds away from resetting her fourth-fastest program mark.
Cal Poly's third podium result came courtesy of Drew Huston earning silver in the 100 Back (46.11) with an NCAA B-Cut time that shattered his previous program record by .42 seconds. Without Santa Barbara's gold-winning swimmer, Huston's time would have also been the conference record-breaker.
Scott Iannacone (48.34) placed 5th and also cracked the top-5 with the program's fifth-fastest mark. Barely missing out on the A-Final, Sam Seybold (49.10) finished at the top of the B-Final in 9th place.
The women's 100 Back had Kristin Der getting into the B-Final (56.89) alongside teammate Ella Bettencourt (57.46).
The women's 3-meter diving event split the evening's swimming finals with Shayna Gayer as Cal Poly's representative in the A-Final, finishing 7th (249.55) as Ava Lazovsky (241.95), Abigail Leight (241.10), and Ava Geronimo (214.60) all scored in the 200's for the B-Final.
Day three closed with the 400 Medley Relay event as the men's team of Huston, Yoo, Finn Schlamp, and Jonathan Butler (3:10.06) earned second place and broke their program record set this year by nearly a whole half-second. Der, Melia Costa, Cheng, and Bettencourt (3:47.07) earned 5th in the women's event.
