Last time Cal Poly traveled to Seattle two weeks ago, the Mustangs saw six school records fall and a total of 15 top-five marks in program history get recorded. Across the two-day UW Invitational, redshirt senior Aidan McCarthy (men’s 800-meter), and sophomores Jordan Jackson (women’s 400-meter) and Alexander Franco (men’s 400-meter) broke school records, while graduate student Corban Payne (men’s shot put), and juniors MacGregor TeSelle (men’s 200-meter) and Rory Devaney (men’s weight throw) shattered their own school records.
McCarthy had the most impressive performance for the Mustangs in their last trip to Seattle, obliterating the previous school record in the men’s indoor 800-meter by over six seconds. His blistering time of 1:46.55 surpassed the previous UW Invitational meet record and is currently the eighth-fastest ran in the nation this indoor season, putting him in line to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships on March 14-15 in Virginia Beach. It was McCarthy’s first time running the 800-meter indoors or outdoors since placing seventh in the event at the 2023 NCAA Outdoor Championships. The school record holder in the indoor and outdoor 800 will run the mile at the Husky Classic, an event he also owns the school record in (3:56.09).
Three other Mustangs own top-50 marks recorded in Division I this outdoor season. Devaney currently owns the 26th-best mark recorded in the men’s weight throw this season (71 feet, 4.25 inches) and will look to climb up that list when he competes in the event Friday. Senior Spencer Pickren has the 47th-fastest time in the country in the men’s 3,000-meter (3:57.31) and junior Lexi Evans is No. 44 in Division I in the women’s pole vault (13 feet, 7.75 inches). Evans made her indoor season debut at the UW Invitational two weeks ago, climbing to No. 2 on Cal Poly’s all-time list in the women’s indoor pole vault with an indoor personal best. Evans won the Big West pole vault title last year and is a two-time NCAA West Preliminaries qualifier outdoors.
Following the Husky Classic, a handful of Mustangs will travel to the East Coast to take part in Boston University’s Last Chance Invite on Sunday, March 2.
