HOUSTON, Texas — Kicking off day one of the Big West Championships were dueling 200 Medley Relay program records from both the men's and women's teams.
Kiersten Weiler, Melia Costa, Mikaela Gomez, and Summer Cheng (1:42.16) finished 5th of 12 for Cal Poly's women.
The men's squad of Drew Huston, Evan Yoo, Finn Schlamp, and Jonathan Butler (1:25.95) not only gave the top two teams an incredible swim to the podium but shaved off over one second to reset their program record for a fourth time this season.
Were it not for placing third behind Hawai'i and UC Santa Barbara, that time would have been good enough to beat the conference record mark coming into the tournament.
Lucas Lehrer (270.05) and Justin Dolezal (230.00) placed 4th and 6th of 6 respectively in the 1-meter diving finals. Lehrer's final round score was his second best dive this season.
Cal Poly's men enjoyed their second podium finish of the day with the 800 Free Relay team of Nick Elliott, Lucas Crother-Collado, Evan Yoo, and Lucas Meneghetti (6:28.48) securing bronze while just over a second away from the program record.
The 800 Free Relay team A for the Mustang women of Olivia Sundgren, Courtney Cross, Amalie Claus-Udarbe, and Keira Scott (7:28.17) blitzed their seed time and finished 5th to wrap up the opening day of postseason action.
After day one, Cal Poly's men sit firmly in second place as a team with 92 points trailing only Hawai'i (111) and the women are fifth with 56 points.
Day two of the Big West Championships continue tomorrow starting at 10:00 AM where the men's and women's 500 Free, 200 IM, 50 Free, and 200 Free Relay take place. Diving will also open up the women's events with the 1-meter while the men move to the 3-meter.
