SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — In a dramatic, back-and-forth battle, the Cal Poly Mustangs showcased tremendous resilience but ultimately fell just short, dropping a 3-2 decision (28-26, 17-25, 22-25, 25-22, 13-15) to UC Santa Barbara on Thursday.
The match was a nail-biter from the start, featuring a staggering 42 ties and 17 lead changes. The foes battled deep into extra points in the opening set before Cal Poly finally seized it, 28-26. UC Santa Barbara responded forcefully, leveling the match with a 25-17 win in the second set.
The third set was another tightly contested affair, with the Gauchos edging out a 25-22 win to take a 2-1 lead. Facing elimination, the Mustangs dug deep in the fourth, battling to a 25-22 victory to force a decisive fifth set. The final frame was a microcosm of the entire match, a tense battle where neither team led by more than two points. In the end, UC Santa Barbara found the final edge to secure the 15-13 win.
Despite the loss, several Mustangs delivered standout, season-best performances.
Setter Emme Bullis orchestrated the offense in one of her finest career outings, dishing out a season-high 60 assists. She also contributed a career-high 6 kills in an all-around impressive display. Her assists tally is the second-highest of her career, trailing only a 62-assist performance against UC Davis in 2022, and tied for the single-match high in the Big West this season.
Providing the firepower on the attack was Emma Fredrick, who powered her way to a match-high and career-high 21 kills. Chloe Leluge followed closely with a career-high 14 kills, while Kendall Beshear (13) and Annabelle Thalken (12) also reached double digits.
Defensively, Charlotte Kelly headed the block with 3 total stuffs, and Elif Hurriyet once again surpassed double-digit digs with 10. Fredrick (9), Bullis (8), and Beshear (8) also contributed to the defensive effort.
While the loss is a tough one, snapping the team's 10-match win streak, the Mustangs remain solidly in second place and hold a one-win advantage over both UC Santa Barbara and Long Beach State. Cal Poly returns to Mott Athletics Center on Saturday for Senior Day, aiming to complete a perfect home season record.
