SAN LUIS OBISPO — A victory over UC Davis on Saturday at 1 p.m. would extend Cal Poly's home winning streak to a full calendar year.
Enjoying an 11-0 run at Mott Athletics Center this season, the Mustangs entered the week with the best home record in the country and one of the nation's longest active home winning streaks dating back to 2024.
Cal Poly swept its fourth straight opponent Thursday night, defeating UC Riverside (25-12, 25-18, 25-22) to improve to 16-5 (7-2 Big West). During this stretch of sweeps, the Mustangs have held opponents under a .100 attacking percentage while hitting at least .290 in three of the four matches. The team now ranks 15th in Division I with a .284 hitting percentage.
Against the Highlanders, Emma Fredrick led all players with 16 kills while hitting .444 and adding nine digs. Elif Hurriyet anchored the back row with a match-high 13 digs. Kendall Beshear tallied 11 kills and eight digs. Charlotte Kelly recorded 10 kills with a .600 hitting percentage to go with a team-leading four total blocks. Emme Bullis dished out 38 assists, guiding the team to a collective .392 hitting percentage, the program's 10th match this season hitting over .300. Bullis enjoyed a similar performance last weekend, which earned her Big West Setter of the Week.
With Long Beach State's loss Thursday at CSUN, the Mustangs and The Beach are now tied for second in the conference, both still two matches behind first-place UC Davis (13-4, 9-0 Big West). The Aggies also boast the best overall away record in the conference (6-2) and are riding a ten-match win streak.
Of the 25 sets they have played in Big West competition, the Aggies have lost only seven. The last two of those came against UC Santa Barbara in a tough back-and-forth battle on Thursday; the Gauchos pushed the unbeaten Aggies to two-point differentials in three sets.
The Mustangs split their two matchups against the Aggies last season, losing the first match at home before clinching the Big West regular season title with a nail-biting 3-2 thriller in Davis. Prior to 2024, Cal Poly had won the previous 15 matchups dating back to 2016.
Although not an overpowering offense, UC Davis is the conference's most defensively stout team, leading the Big West with a .143 opponent hitting percentage (4th in Division I) and 2.65 blocks per set (25th in Division I).
As a team, the Aggies are hitting just .231 but are led individually by two of the conference's best attackers: Jade Light (4.05 kills per set, leads Big West) and Ally Chandler (.419 hitting percentage, second in Big West). Setter Mia Starr is also the only player in the conference averaging more than ten assists (10.21 per set), while Allie Caldwell anchors the net as a formidable blocker (1.38 blocks per set).
Following a potential defense of their home streak, the Mustangs begin the second half of the conference slate with a pair of road matchups at Cal State Bakersfield (10/31) and CSUN (11/1) next weekend.
