RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Cal Poly swept its fourth straight opponent Thursday night, defeating UC Riverside (25-12, 25-18, 25-22) in straight sets at the SRC Arena.
The victory improved the Mustangs' record to 16-5 overall and 7-2 in the Big West Conference, showcasing their offensive and defensive dominance by defeating the Highlanders for the 20th consecutive time.
During their four-match stretch of sweeps, the Mustangs have held every opponent under a .105 attacking percentage, including three straight below .100.
Cal Poly started the match at a blistering pace, racing out to a commanding lead and never looking back. The offense was nearly flawless, committing just one attack error while racking up 14 kills for a remarkable .520 hitting percentage; one of the team's best sets of the season.
UC Riverside showed more fight in the second set, keeping the score close early on. However, Cal Poly's offense continued to fire on all cylinders, pounding an astonishing 20 kills. The Mustangs broke open a tight contest with a key mid-set run, pulling away to secure a 25-18 win and a firm 2-0 match lead.
The Highlanders took the first point of the final set, but Cal Poly immediately answered with a surge to build a large, sustained lead. The Mustangs' sideout game remained strong, and they fended off a late rally to complete the sweep with a 25-22 victory.
Emma Fredrick was once again a force on the outside, leading all players with 16 kills while hitting .444 and adding nine digs. Her defensive prowess was matched only by Elif Hurriyet, who led the match with 13 digs.
Kendall Beshear tallied 11 kills and eight digs, while Charlotte Kelly was a model of efficiency, terminating 10 of her 15 attack attempts for a .600 hitting percentage to go with a team-leading four total blocks. Emme Bullis directed the offense with 38 assists, guiding the team to a collective .392 hitting percentage.
The Mustangs now return to Mott Athletics Center, where they will defend a 15-match home win streak. One more victory would mark a full calendar year since their last home loss. Cal Poly continues its pursuit of the top of the Big West standings with a chance to hand conference leader UC Davis its first league loss of the season on Saturday at 1 p.m.
