SAN LUIS OBISPO — Cal Poly strung together a ninth sweep at Mott Athletics Center on Saturday afternoon, routing Cal State Fullerton in straight sets (25-17, 25-23, 25-15).
From start to finish, the Mustangs (15-5, 6-2 Big West) controlled the match on both sides of the net, out-killing the Titans 43-26 and holding them to a .097 hitting percentage.
The victory extends Cal Poly’s home win streak to 15 matches, giving the Mustangs an opportunity next weekend to finish an entire calendar year unbeaten at home for the second time in a decade.
Cal Poly set the tone early by overcoming an initial back-and-forth that featured 13 ties. With the frame knotted at 16, the Mustangs exploded on a 9-1 run to close out the first set. The offense was firing on all cylinders, posting a blistering .317 hitting percentage in the opener. Key kills down the stretch from Kendall Beshear helped fuel the surge.
In the second set, Cal State Fullerton fought hard to even the match, pulling ahead late to a 20-18 lead before the frame was tied again at 23. However, the Mustangs demonstrated impressive resilience, clawing back to secure a narrow 25-23 victory with two final kills from Beshear and Chloe Leluge.
Refusing to let the Titans back into the match, Cal Poly dominated the third set, racing out to a 14-6 lead and never looking back in a 25-15 victory. The Mustangs' offense was nearly flawless, hitting .458 with just two errors in the final frame, while their defense held Fullerton to a .074 attacking percentage.
Beshear led offensively with a match-high 14 kills, while Emma Fredrick provided consistency on both sides of the ball, racking up 13 kills with a .414 hitting percentage and adding nine digs.
Defensively, Elif Hurriyet posted 13 digs for her second straight double-digit dig performance and added four assists from the back row.
Chloe Leluge reaffirmed her textbook efficiency, converting eight kills on just 14 attempts for a .500 hitting percentage. Leluge was also a wall at the net, recording one solo block and three block assists. Forming the net-front barrier with Leluge, Annabelle Thalken co-led the Mustangs with four total blocks while supplying five kills.
Emme Bullis dished out 34 assists for an average of over ten per set and contributed in every facet of the game with two service aces, a team-leading 15 digs, and a kill, marking her eighth double-double of the season.
Although the Mustangs could not gain ground in the Big West standings as UC Davis, Long Beach State, and UC Santa Barbara all secured wins, they now head on the road to face UC Riverside on Thursday before an opportunity to leapfrog UC Davis while defending their home win streak on Saturday.
