SAN LUIS OBISPO — The Mustangs soaked up the Mott Magic on Friday evening, extending their nearly year-long home win streak to 14 matches with a sweep (25-21, 25-19, 25-14) over UC Irvine.
The victory, which improved Cal Poly's record to 14-5 (5-2 Big West), was the program’s 11th of the season in straight sets. The Mustangs improved in every successive set, culminating in a dominant third frame where they held the Anteaters to a paltry 14 points and a negative hitting percentage.
The Mustangs never trailed in the entire match, allowing only eight tie scores. Cal Poly’s serves were a key factor as the team totaled 10 aces on the night, its highest mark in a single match this season.
Cal Poly started the match strong with two aces from Ella Scott. Riding that early momentum, the Mustangs built multiple leads of three or more points and never looked back despite UC Irvine putting up its best offensive performance of the night (.303 hitting percentage).
The second set was competitive throughout, featuring six ties. Despite the back-and-forth, the frame was always in Cal Poly's control. The Mustangs also showcased their stamina and consistency, winning two lengthy, back-to-back rallies. Emma Fredrick sealed the second set with a service ace.
Set three saw Cal Poly’s offense shine, posting its highest hitting percentage of the night at a .440 clip. Capitalizing on Anteater errors, the Mustangs seized an early 10-4 lead. Behind a fierce offensive attack, the Mustangs racked up over half of their points (13) in the set on kills alone. Mirroring Fredrick in the second set, true freshman Maren O’Farrell clinched the commanding team performance with a match-winning ace.
Emma Fredrick drove the offense with nine kills, while Elif Hurriyet captained the defense with 11 digs. Annabelle Thalken and Chloe Leluge were also pivotal, contributing seven kills each, with Leluge leading the team with a .375 hitting percentage. Emme Bullis distributed 27 assists while also contributing two service aces and two block assists. Charlotte Kelly was exceptionally effective, posting a .545 hitting percentage with six kills and three block assists. Freshman Aveya Stone came off the bench to contribute seven crucial kills, continuing to impress in her limited appearances.
This commanding win keeps Cal Poly in third place in the Big West conference standings. The Mustangs will face Cal State Fullerton on Saturday, hoping to extend the home win streak and gain ground on Long Beach State and UC Davis at the top of the table.
