SACRAMENTO – Sophomore forward Colin Pearce’s first goal of 2025 cancelled out an early strike from Sacramento State midfielder Allbranly Gue, but the Cal Poly men’s soccer program settled for a 1-1 Wednesday draw at Hornet Field.
Senior goalkeeper Nicky McCune produced four saves for Cal Poly (5-4-5, 2-1-2), which entered Wednesday’s match trailing joint Big West co-leaders Cal State Bakersfield and UC Santa Barbara by just a point in the conference standings (both programs play at 7 p.m. Wednesday).
“I think, overall, we played well – apart from the first 15 minutes of the first half. We played well enough to win the game, we hit the crossbar, we had two video review calls that didn’t go our way, but that’s sport,” third-year Cal Poly head coach Oige Kennedy said. “We battled hard throughout the game and I was proud of the boys in how they approached a tricky daytime game on a muddy surface.”
“We maybe could have taken a little more risk in front of goal and gotten a few more players in the box when we got to good wide areas. There are always things we want to improve upon and that’s how we’ll approach the rest of the week.”

McCune chalked up two saves inside the opening seven minutes before being bested by Gue at the left post in the 12th minute.
The Mustangs, however, needed just two minutes to equalize as freshman midfielder Cole Aman and junior forward Jack Civitts combined to set up Pearce, who became Cal Poly’s 12th different goalscorer this fall after looping his attempt over Hornets goalkeeper Andres Rosales.
Outshooting Sacramento State on the afternoon, 12-6, Cal Poly sophomore midfielder Rylan Firouznam forced Rosales into a 41st-minute save before junior forward Sean McTague did so again in the 49th.
McTague returned in the 57th to briefly place Cal Poly in front before his potential fourth goal of the year was whistled offside.
McCune, meanwhile, added saves in the 73rd and 87th minutes to preserve the stalemate.
Cal Poly next returns home to host Blue-Green rival UC Santa Barbara on Saturday, Oct. 18 at 4 p.m. The Mustangs look for their first four-match unbeaten run against the Gauchos since 2016-18.
“We have an exciting opportunity to get after it again in the best college soccer rivalry game in the country,” Kennedy said. “All our energy and focus turns to that.”
