SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — After opening the indoor season with an historic showing, the Cal Poly track and field team heads back to Dempsey Indoor this Friday and Saturday to compete in the UW Invitational.
Over 30 Mustangs are set to take part in the program’s second indoor meet of the year. Junior Lexi Evans kicks off competition for the team in Seattle at 1 p.m. Friday with the women’s pole vault, with running events starting at 2 p.m. that day. Events Saturday start at 10 a.m.

Cal Poly opened its indoor season two weeks ago in Seattle with countless standout performances at the UW Indoor Preview. The Mustangs saw six school records fall and a total of 19 top-five marks in program history recorded during the two-day meet and the team is expecting more stellar performances this week.
Graduate student Chase Walter (men’s 600-meter), redshirt senior Aidan McCarthy (men’s 1,000-meter) and senior Anna Grexton (women’s weight throw) all obliterated program records at the UW Indoor Preview on Jan. 17-18, while senior Spencer Pickren (men’s 3,000-meter) and juniors Rory Devaney (men’s weight throw) and MacGregor TeSelle (men’s 60-meter) all shattered their own school records.
Grexton and Devaney are both entered in the weight throw again this week, while McCarthy is set to race in the men’s 800. The Pleasanton, Calif. native is the current outdoor school record holder in the event and placed seventh in the 800 at the 2023 NCAA Championships to earn First Team All-American honors. TeSelle is entered in both the men’s 60 and 200 — he currently owns the school record in both — and Pickren will run the mile this meet. Last year at the UW Invite, Pickren became just one of just five Mustangs ever to run a sub-four-minute mile with a time of 3:59.38 — third fastest in school history. Walter is not competing this week, but his time in the 600 at the UW Preview two weeks ago (1:16.14) shattered the Dempsey Indoor facility record and is currently the second fastest ran in the world in 2025.
Freshmen Madison Easter and Jeffrey Overgaard both had impressive showings in their Cal Poly debut two weeks ago. Easter ran the fourth-fastest indoor women’s 200 time (24.97 seconds) to capture second and posted the fifth-fastest 60 time in school history (7.70 seconds). Overgaard recorded a time of 1:19.36 in the men’s 600, No. 2 on Cal Poly’s all-time list. Junior Desie Armstrong, a transfer from Diablo Valley College, also showed out in her first meet as a Mustang on Jan. 17-18, running the second fastest time in school history in the women’s 60 (7.49 seconds). She was just .02 seconds off the school record in the event.
Evans is set to make her indoor debut Friday. The 2024 Big West women’s pole vault champion placed 19th overall at the NCAA West Preliminaries in Arkansas a year ago — finishing just seven places away from securing a ticket to nationals.
Following this week’s meet, Cal Poly heads back to Seattle for the third time this indoor season on Feb. 14-15 to participate in the Husky Classic.
