DAVIS, Calif. — Cal Poly brought the 2024-25 regular season to a close with a 185-112 loss to conference opponent UC Davis. Highlighted by a decent number of individual victories, the Mustangs now look towards preparing for the championship slate.
Summer Cheng helped a pair of relays earn second-place finishes throughout the day, racing 1:44.89 in the 200 Medley Relay with Kristin Der, Melia Costa, and Mikaela Gomez as well as swimming 1:35.16 in the 200 Free Relay as Der and Costa remained but Brielle Vail participated in place of Gomez. Individually, Cal Poly's reigning Queen of the Pool also finished third in the 50 Free (24.22).
The Mustangs put two teams in podium position for the 200 Medley Relay, the aforementioned Der-led team in second and another group in third (1:46.66) with Kiersten Weiler, Amalie Claus-Udarbe, Taylor Lyon, and Ella Bettencourt. Claus-Udarbe finished in third for the 200 Free (1:54.96) just ahead of teammates Keira Scott (4th, 1:55.18) and Olivia Sundgren (5th, 1:55.23).
For the second consecutive day, Sundgren highlighted the Mustang women with her efforts in the 500 (5:01.07) and 1000 Free (10:25.76) to sweep both for first place again.
Melia Costa, after narrowly missing out on a 100-Breast win yesterday, took first (1:04.57) in the event while also helping both relay teams to second-place finishes.
Placing no lower than second through a quartet of races, Kristin Der was part of those two relay teams while picking up a pair of individual wins, sweeping the backstroke events respectively (57.79, 2:03.84).
Rhian Neitzel enjoyed a successful day as well, individually, winning the 200 Breast (2:19.74) and finishing second in the 200 IM (2:08.85).
Finally, Kayla Wieckowski earned a pair of podium finishes, second in the 200 Back (2:03.84) behind teammate Kristin Der, and third in 200 Fly (2:06.17) while the best among Mustangs in the event.
With UC Davis only having a women's team, Cal Poly's men elected to stay fresh and participate in some light competition against each other. Despite there not being any program top-fives cracked or better NCAA-qualifying times than those already set, the men put up a solid, respectable effort considering yesterday's strenuous winning performance.
Ava Lazovsky finished highest among all Mustangs in the springboard events, placing fourth overall in the 1-meter (250.94) and 3-meter (269.93).
