DAVIS, Calif. – Cal Poly men's tennis freshman Clayton Anderson made quite the first impression in his first event as a collegiate player, taking home the Grey Division singles title at the Aggie Invitational in Davis to highlight the Mustang men's tennis team's first tournament of the fall.
Anderson was 4-0 in singles for the tournament. He started off by beating Nevada's Gregoire Valente 7-6(3), 7-6(4) in the first round. He then handily took down Sacramento State's Hayden Rand in straight sets 6-2, 6-2 in the quarterfinals. He beat UC Davis' Rithvik Katpelly in the semifinals after Katpelly had to retire in the second set due to injury.
In the final, Anderson went toe-to-toe with Santa Clara's Mahir Khurana. After Khurana took the first set 6-4, Anderson battled back to win the next two sets 6-4, 6-3 to secure the singles title.
Elsewhere, Mustang sophomore Raz Haviv won three singles matches on his way to an appearance in the Blue Division finals. Freshman Jack McGary also had a strong collegiate debut, making the semifinals in the Golf Division singles.
In doubles, the tandem of freshman Jack Cross and senior Bastiaan Weststrate made a run to the semifinals of the Blue Division in their first time playing together.
The Mustangs will play their second event of the fall this coming weekend when they head down to Goleta for the UCSB Classic, Oct. 4-6.
