Cal Poly Extend Unbeaten Run to Four Matches, Start 2-0 in Big West
9/28/2024 6:15:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Cal Poly (9-4, 2-0 BWC) strung together a second consecutive shutout to kick start the Big West schedule with Saturday's 25-21, 25-22, 25-22 victory over Cal State Bakersfield.
Tommi Stockham collected a game-leading 12 kills to not only notch her 11th double-digit kill game this season but also move within nine kills of Cal Poly's all time top-5 career kills leaders. The redshirt senior posted a high clip (.417) to help the Mustangs go above .300 hitting percentage for the third time this season.
Against her former program for the first time since transferring, Breklyn Pulling was right behind Stockham with 11 kills while also picking up a trio of digs. She was perfect through the first half of the opening frame with three kills and zero errors as the Mustangs ran away with the set after a 15-11 lead.
Cal State Bakersfield originally kept up with Cal Poly in that first set with six tie scores, but consistent hitting all around and avoiding errors (4) helped the Mustangs maintain the lead. CSUB pushed late and hit .206 but Emme Bullis assisted 12 times as Lizzy Markovska and Stockham each picked up five kills to help Cal Poly take a 25-21 set victory.
During the second set, CSUB started with an early 3-1 lead, but Cal Poly quickly surged back with a strong run to pull ahead 10-4 and never relinquished that lead. Stockham extended her day to 11 kills at that point to help Cal Poly earn a commanding two-set lead at 25-22.
The third and final set was easily the closest of the entire match, featuring 16 tie scores and 6 different lead changes as the Roadrunners gave a valiant effort in trying to start a rally. Thanks, in part, to Elif Hurriyet (13 total digs) and a slew of attacking errors from CSUB (7 errors, .143 hitting) Cal Poly was able to come out on top 25-22 again.
For the first time since 2019, Cal Poly has begun the Big West season with a pair of sweeps and remains first place, both in the conference record and overall. The Mustangs have also moved far ahead of the pack with a team hitting percentage of .245 for the conference lead.
After spending the entirety of September on the road, Cal Poly will finally play a match back in Mott Athletic Center with a pair of Big West matches against UC Davis and UC Riverside on Oct. 4-5.
