Mustangs Suffer First Big West Loss of 2024 to UC Davis
10/4/2024 9:30:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly volleyball program fought hard in an attempted comeback against UC Davis, but the Mustangs (9-5, 2-1 BWC) were out-hit by an inspired Aggies team while dropping their first conference loss of the season (23-25, 14-25, 25-19, 17-25).
UC Davis, one of the conference's best blocking programs statistically (2.00 per set), forced Cal Poly into a tough position with hitting as the Mustangs put up their lowest percentage of the season thus far (.065).
Even so, the Mustangs were led offensively by standout freshman middle blocker Chloe Leluge who has hit at least .300 for the ninth time while co-leading the Mustangs tonight with 9 kills and 2 total blocks.
Service errors plagued both sides throughout the match as the two foes combined for 33 total. The vast majority of these for the Mustangs were in the first two sets that UC Davis won, particularly in the 25-14 second frame.
After falling into that 0-2 hole, Cal Poly managed a solid third set while improving to a .200 hitting percentage and forcing the Aggies to .063 as the Mustangs rallied to a 25-19 set victory.
The Mustangs came close to gaining enough momentum in the fourth set to possibly trigger a tiebreaker, but UC Davis put together a 10-2 run to seal the win after the match was tied at 15-all.
After a slight setback from their four-game win streak being snapped, the Mustangs welcome UC Riverside on Saturday for an afternoon matchup in Mott Athletics Center.
