SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly (10-4, 3-1 BWC) is back in the win column and temporarily third place after putting together a commanding performance (25-18, 25-21, 25-12) against UC Riverside.
Led by Kendall Beshear's fourth career double-double (10 kills, 14 digs) and Tommi Stockham's 11 kills, the Mustangs (.347 hitting percentage) hit over .300 for the fourth time, capped off by an incredibly .500 effort during the 25-12 third set win. Stockham now has double-digit kill totals in 12 matches this season.
With a total of 7 service errors, the Mustangs overturned last night's serving troubles as their aces even totaled more than the errors with Cal Poly collecting 8 of them. Stockham and London Haberfield each led with a pair of aces. The Mustangs also committed just 10 attacking errors, their third-lowest amount thus far in the season.
Breklyn Pulling matched her Cal Poly career high of 5 total blocks in a single game, pacing all players that game, while veteran middle blocker Kate Slack earned her first reps of the season, putting up a pair of her own blocks. Alongside Pulling and Slack, Cal Poly combined for 8 total blocks as a team while holding the Highlanders to a paltry .163 hitting percentage.
Emme Bullis supplied 35 assists, passing that 30+ threshold for 12th time this season. Bullis also continued her dump game, collecting a quartet of kills to only a sole error.
During the first set, Cal Poly fell into a 5-0 hole to a surging UC Riverside attack, but the Mustangs rebounded with a fantastic run that saw them finally overtake the Highlanders for a 15-14 lead at the media timeout. Cal Poly made its blocking presence known during that first set, which ultimately proved the difference as the Green and Gold took it handily 25-18 while hitting at a .382 clip.
The second set featured a much closer battle with the Highlanders forcing 7 of Cal Poly's 10 errors while posting their best totals of the match as a team (.242 hitting, 15 kills). Despite a number of runs through the middle of the set that gave UCR the lead at times, Cal Poly went on a 8-4 run after a 17-17 tie to take the set 25-21.
The Mustangs got off to a scorching start in the third set, jumping out to 12-3 before UCR attempted to regroup via timeout. Emme Bullis and Breklyn Pulling combined for a handful of blocks together during that incredible run before the Mustangs continued their rampage with another 13 points for the 25-12 set victory and match win.
At 3-1 in Big West play, the Mustangs now head back on the road for matches against UC Irvine and Cal State Fullerton.
