Pulling’s Performance Headlines 7th Sweep of 2024 in Win Over UC Irvine
10/11/2024 10:45:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
IRVINE, Calif. — Breklyn Pulling tallied a career-high 7 total blocks as the Mustangs (11-5, 4-1 BWC) leaped back to the top of the Big West standings after their 7th sweep of the season during a win over UC Irvine (25-23, 25-23, 25-23).
Pulling's blocking ability was a big reason Cal Poly forced the Anteaters to a .156-team hitting percentage. Still, the redshirt sophomore middle also led the team with 11 kills, her fifth double-digit attacking effort of 2024, and hit at a .625 clip.
Tommi Stockham (8 kills), Lizzy Markovska (7), and Chloe Leluge (7) also got into the offensive action and helped greatly at various points of the match where Cal Poly found itself in a scoring rut. Markovska's kills were particularly highlighted by runs of multiple consecutive points.
Emme Bullis enjoyed her fair share of the defensive responsibility, recording her 5th double-double of the season with 35 assists and 10 digs against UC Irvine.
Cal Poly showed skill in maneuvering around what was one of the Big West's best defenses coming into the evening. Despite UC Irvine holding opponents to a .175 hitting percentage before the match, the Mustangs met the challenge with a .254 team-hitting mark.
To start the first set, the Mustangs deployed solid defense with minimal errors and kills from multiple players alongside the blocking duo of Pulling and Bullis, which they did well last weekend.
Cal Poly held a lead since three-all, but UC Irvine fought back to a 12-12 tie. The Mustangs struggled to keep up the same attacking pace and experienced a lowered hitting percentage, but the match continued in a back-and-forth fashion. Yet another Pulling-assisted block helped end the set with a 25-23 Cal Poly victory.
Despite less control in the hitting side of the second set, Cal Poly took advantage of UCI being plagued with mistakes as the Mustangs led 12-7 midway through with the Anteaters already racking up 7 errors to that point.
Cal Poly extended the lead to 20-15 but Irvine surged back late in the set with solid hitting on the outside, finding consistency to come back with a 23-22 lead. Lizzy Markovska clutched the final three points with a pair of kills and a block assist with Pulling to help close the second set 25-23.
Although firmly down two sets, the Anteaters jumped out to a quick 7-2 lead in the third before Cal Poly began answering and eventually tied the set 12-12 with four straight kills split between Chloe Leluge and Stockham.
The Anteaters' blocking game helped them retrieve the lead with a multi-point run that saw Irvine take a 15-12 lead. Cal Poly came right back at the Anteaters for an 18-16 lead that included a trio of consecutive kills from Markovska. Despite a continual struggle for the lead between the two foes, four UCI errors in the final six points gave Cal Poly a third 25-23 set victory and the match win.
After downing a team tied with them in first place of the Big West, the Mustangs now head to Cal State Fullerton in an effort to keep the Titans winless and stay on top of the conference
