FULLERTON, Calif. — Cal Poly yet again retained the Big West Conference's top spot after easing by Cal State Fullerton (25-14, 25-17, 25-18) during a second consecutive sweep this weekend.
It was a fantastic night for rotational hitters Lizzy Markovska and Amy Hiatt, who were especially integral in the first set with four kills apiece and no errors with Markovska hitting a pair of service aces.
The Mustangs utilized just nine players, sticking to a tight lineup and rotation, which helped maintain steady consistency and provide no surprises against a Titans squad that has experienced a tough season thus far.
Led by Tommi Stockham (13 kills), four Mustangs tallied at least 9 kills in the match. Breklyn Pulling (10), Hiatt (10), and Markovska (9) followed closely behind Stockham and helped Cal Poly to its fifth match staying above a .300 hitting percentage this season (.360).
Continuing with her usual versatility and diverse skill set, Emme Bullis supplied 31 assists and 8 digs to the Mustangs' fantastic all-around performance.
Elif Hurriyet and Markovska both hit a trio of service aces while Hurriyet also led the match with 15 digs. Elsewhere on the defensive side of play, Pulling remained Cal Poly's blocking leader on the season with another three total blocks tonight.
To start the match, Cal Poly deployed a quick pace of play with straight-forward dig, set, and kill rallies, but both teams remained in a back-and-forth battle with 7 ties through the opening frame.
Cal Poly finally broke through for the match's largest lead at the time, 15-10, before the media timeout only to run away on a 10-4 run and finish off the set with ease at 25-14. The Mustangs had a clean, nearly flawless first set with just one error committed and a .536 hitting percentage.
The second set started nearly identical to the first with a tight battle that had points heading to each team in succession, though primarily due to Mustangs stacking errors.
Cal Poly settled down later into the frame after four quick errors to start as Pulling and Stockham began to show out in spite of a quiet first set, both collecting 8 kills.
Following Cal State Fullerton pulling ahead for a two-point lead at the midway point of the set, the Mustangs rallied for a massive 10-2 run to take the set 25-17.
Cal State Fullerton jumped out to a quick 5-1 lead in the third set that was immediately answered by the Mustangs surging back to 6-5 with the help of blocks assisted by Pulling, Markovska, and Hiatt.
Yet again, coming out of the media timeout gave Cal Poly the break it needed to pull ahead through the second half of the frame, taking a 19-15 lead that would prove to put the set and match out of reach as the Mustangs won it 25-18.
After stringing together five sweeps in their last six matches, the Mustangs will be coming back to Mott Athletics Center next weekend for what will surely prove to be a challenging stretch of competition against UC Santa Barbara and Hawai'i.
