Stockham Unleashes Attacking Barrage in Sweep Over Rival UC Santa Barbara
10/17/2024 9:30:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — For the first time since 2019, Cal Poly (13-5, 6-1 BWC) swept its central coast rival UC Santa Barbara (25-22, 25-21, 25-17), battling to a massive Blue-Green victory while highlighted by Tommi Stockham's explosive night with 6 kills per set against the Gauchos.
Coming into this edition of the Blue-Green rivalry, the Mustangs were searching for a win against the Gauchos after having lost the last four matches. Cal Poly accomplished the task and more, notching a sixth sweep in seven Big West matches and retaining first place. Stockham was virtually unstoppable, tallying kills at-will while hitting at her highest clip (.455) since Oct. 7, 2023 against UC Riverside. While leading the match with 18 kills, her third highest total of the season, she not only kept up an astonishing per-set pace but also contributed on defense with 4 digs and 2 total blocks.
Lizzy Markovska posted 8 kills and 7 digs, coming in second on the team for both of those totals, while middle blocking duo Chloe Leluge (6 kills) and Breklyn Pulling (5 kills) also assisted in the offensive output that saw the Mustangs combine for a .287 team hitting percentage.
Emme Bullis was clinical in setting Cal Poly's attackers, tallying 32 assists (over 10 per set averaged) for the 15th time this year. Elsewhere on the court, Elif Hurriyet (9 digs) and London Haberfield (8 digs) led defensively with Pulling totaling four blocks, including a pair of solo stops.
Cal Poly and UCSB matched runs back-and-forth through the first set, but the Gauchos were hamstrung by a bevy of service errors. That set was the tightest by far, featuring 10 ties and a trio of lead changes, but Cal Poly pulled ahead to 15-12 at the media timeout and never relinquished the lead despite UC Santa Barbara coming within a couple points multiple times, eaking out a 25-22 win in the end.
Service errors continued to plague the Gauchos, while Markovska and Stockham took advantage of the opposition's mistakes to help Cal Poly overturn an early 12-8 UCSB lead. After getting back in front at 17-16, the Mustangs forced 6 errors from UCSB to take a definitive 25-21 set two victory.
The most dominant set of the match was the one to seal it as Cal Poly enjoyed a number of multi-point runs despite falling behind early for the second straight set. A 12-4 run through the middle of the set made a huge difference in the Mustangs earning a 22-14 lead that persisted for a sweep to stay atop the Big West for yet another match.
Cal Poly now welcomes Hawai'i, the team that forced the Mustangs out of the 2023 Big West Championship, while the Green and Gold are riding as much momentum as they have all season.
