Mustangs Halted by Hawai'i Hitters at Home

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — In what seemed to be a closer match than the set score would indicate, Cal Poly (13-6, 5-2 BWC) fought extremely hard to the tune of 34 total ties and 18 lead changes but fell to a Hawai'i sweep that also dropped the Mustangs out of first place in the conference.
Picking up her fifth double-double of the season, Tommi Stockham was a clear highlight for Cal Poly after leading the team with 14 kills and coming second with 10 digs. Chloe Leluge and Lizzy Markovska both followed behind with 7 kills a piece, which also included 6 digs from Markovska. After this evening, Leluge retained her second spot in the conference with a .365 hitting percentage.
Emme Bullis yet again set 35 assists while also tallying 7 digs. Elif Huriyet led the Mustangs with 11 digs of her own while also supplying a trio of set assists.
Although a bit less accurate down the stretch, Cal Poly's clinical first set hitting allowed the Green and Gold to put together a .274 team hitting percentage, holding their errors to 10 (tied for 3rd lowest of season).
Coming into the match, the Big West's best hitter was far and away Caylen Alexander, so the Mustangs knew their assignment, holding her to just two kills and a .143 hitting percentage during the first set.
That opening frame had Hawai'i surge out to a quick lead, going up 10-5 before Cal Poly rallied behind a pair of kills each from Stockham and Leluge to take their first lead of the game (12-11) since just two points into the set. Despite the Mustangs continuing to up the pressure and extending to a 16-14 lead, the Rainbow Wahine went on a six-point run that featured a quartet of service aces from Kate Lang, effectively putting the set out of reach. Hawai'i retained that lead all the way through for a 25-21 set win.
Helped greatly by Stockham's steady hitting and with minimal team errors through the second set, Cal Poly overturned two separate Hawai'i leads, 5-1 and 11-6, to retrieve a 17-16 lead later in the frame. Stockham had four consecutive kills that brought them to that lead before raising the stakes at 22-19. Although on the ropes, the Rainbow Wahine stood strong and forced extra points, which eventually went their way, 29-27.
Despite the middle frame being the closest statistically, Cal Poly's fire came out in the final set. Easily the most back-and-forth effort on each side of the net, by the time Cal Poly took a 14-12 lead just before the media timeout there were already 11 ties. Hawai'i regained the lead heading into that timeout, 15-12. Multi-point runs for both teams widened the gap at times, but 21-21 was the last time the opponents were tied as Hawai'i leaned on Kate Lang and Caylen Alexander to secure the final four points for a win.
Cal Poly will now look to take back the reigns of the conference and move into first again with a Thursday match-up against fellow top-3 program Long Beach State before hosting UC San Diego two days later.
